On 25th April, 1915, the day on which George Melsom was killed, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14th Brigade, 5th Division moved into the front line near Vierstraat in the Ypres salient. As they took over these new trenches the enemy opened rapid fire and shelled the woods and communication trenches, causing the battalion some casualties. |
